Federer thanks London crowd

ATP World Tour Finals winner Roger Federer thanks the London crowd for their support after claiming a record sixth season-ending crown by defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the O2 Arena.

Federer raced to the first set in 35 minutes and then served for the match in the second before the Frenchman fought back and won the tie-break to set up a decider.

The 16-time Grand Slam winner proved too strong in the third set, eventually taking it 6-3.

Federer, who won 7-5 6-3, says he had to be on the top of his game to beat the battling Spaniard, admitting Ferrer had the “upper-hand from the baseline” in the first set.

World number nine Janko Tipsarevic, a late replacement at the ATP World Tour Finals for the injured Andy Murray, apologies to his “friend” Novak Djokovic for beating him in their group clash days before the Serbian pair holiday together.

The 27-year-old had no chance of qualifying for the semi-finals but the three-set defeat, 3-6 6-3 6-3, dented his compatriot’s chances.

The defeat, only Djokovic’s sixth in 76 matches this year, is the first time he has lost back-to-back matches since March 2010.
