Following Agnieszka Radwanska’s loss on Day 2 and Eugenie Bouchard’s loss on Day 3, the third consecutive day of seeded upsets featured the surprising exit of last year’s runner-up, Simona Halep.

The world No. 3 came up against Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni and was unable to match her enthusiasm and intensity on this particular day. Lucic-Baroni dazzled the crowd with her remarkable display on court to secure the 7-5, 6-1 win against Halep.

“It’s incredible,” Lucic-Baroni said in her on-court interview after the match. “Simona is such a great champion, and I respect her so much, and to play this well on such a big stadium makes me so happy.

“She’s such a great champion so I knew if I wanted to win I had to go for my shots, and that’s my game anyway, so I just tried to keep going for it and tried to keep my unforced errors down, as well.”

This is not the first time that Lucic-Baroni has beaten Halep on the professional tour. In fact, she defeated her last season at the US Open, which was technically her biggest win on the tour.

However, this is the first time that Lucic-Baroni has reached the third round of the French Open. She will next face Alize Cornet for a spot in the final 16 in Paris.
