Troicki Viktor Troicki Victorious in All Qualifier Final in Sydney

For the first time in the history of the ATP World Tour, two qualifiers faced off in the final of the tournament to determine who would lift the Apia Sydney International title. In the end, world No. 92 Viktor Troicki was victorious against Mikhail Kukushkin 6-2, 6-3.

This marked the Serb’s second ever victory over Kukushkin and lasted a mere 64 minutes. He struck 13 aces and won 73% of his first service points to close out the contest in straightforward fashion.

“There are a lot of emotions actually,” said Troicki. “It’s been a tough road, a lot of work, and it paid off with a nice title. If I look back to where I was five, six months ago, it’s amazing to have a title already. So it’s a really nice moment for me and for all my team. It’s very emotional.

“I’ve got to say I have been working harder than ever probably, and I feel very, very fit,” added the Serb. “I didn’t have any problems. I had eight matches here and luckily I haven’t had problems. I feel very fresh again. I feel I can go again good on Monday. Definitely I was working hard and that’s paying off. I have inside myself trust in my body, and I feel I can do a lot of things.”

Troicki earned $80,000 and 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points for his efforts. Kukushkin won $42,100 and 150 ranking points.

“For sure I can take something positive from this week,” said Kukushkin. “A final of an ATP tournament is important. Of course it’s something special, and of course it was great for me anyway because I won seven matches.

Kukushkin, who begins his Aussie Open against Malek Jaziri, is satisfied with his start to the season – a week that included a quarter-final victory over Juan Martin del Potro.

“To start the season like that, to win so many matches, to get some confidence, is really important. So of course I take something positive from that. But of course it was a disappointing final for me; Viktor just played better today.”

Watson1 Brit Heather Watson Wins WTA Title in Hobart

Several years ago, British No. 1 Heather Watson became the first player of her nationality to win a WTA title since 1988 – a 24-year span – when she was crowned champion in Osaka. On Saturday afternoon, she repeated that feat when she won the International-level WTA event, Hobart International.

Watson waltzed through the draw without dropping a single set, including the final, where she defeated Madison Brengle in straight sets to lift the title. She also beat Sloane Stephens, Roberta Vinci and Alison Riske to earn the crown.

“I’m obviously very happy,” Watson said. “It was tough conditions again today, very windy. And I knew Madison would be tough – we know each other very well on and off the court, and we practice a lot in Florida. I knew it would be a tough one today. And it really was my toughest match of the week.

“I was happy I stayed mentally strong and managed to get ahead and hold my nerve at the end.”

In the doubles final, Johanna Larsson and Kiki Bertens defeated Vitalia Diatchenko and Monica Niculescu 7-5, 6-3 in the final of the tournament earlier in the day. It was Bertens’ first WTA doubles title, and Larsson’s third.

Vesely Jiri Vesely Wins First Career Title in Auckland

The Heineken Open in Auckland suffered from a plague of injuries and early seed exits, all of which led to qualifier Jiri Vesely lifting his first career title on Saturday afternoon at the tournament. The Czech youngster defeated France’s Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-2 to become the first player of his nationality to lift the title in 19 years.

The 21-year-old defeated both Ernests Gulbis and Kevin Anderson en route to his title win and is the latest in a string of title winners born in the 1990s

“It feels amazing to be part of the ATP champions,” said Vesely. “It’s not something that everyone is [able] to achieve, so I’m very grateful for that.

“It’s a great start for me… I can really see that it’s possible to play with the best guys and I think that’s something very important for me for the future.”

Vesely deserved his win, as he even lead the tournament stats in aces, as well as service points, according to the ATP World Tour.

“When you get broken by someone who’s serving like this, you feel like it’s slipping away,” said Mannarino. “I was trying to deal with my own game and it was really tough today. I didn’t have the same feeling that I had during the week. I didn’t feel the ball the same way. Unfortunately it happened in the final.”

The doubles title went to veterans Leander Paes and Raven Klaasen, who won their first team title on Saturday against Dominic Inglot and Florin Mergea. The pairing won the match 7-6(1), 6-4.

“It’s been a good start to the year,” Paes said. “It just goes to show that when you persevere and work hard together, we’re very potent as a team.”
