Although it was a tournament that was almost tailor-made for Agnieszka Radwanska to win this year, the twist of fate came late in the tournament, during the semi-final round, when Camila Giorgi ousted the top seed to set up a final against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.

It was there that the No. 8 seed pulled off the upset and earned her maiden title on the WTA tour.

“I started out nervous today. I lost my serve straight off in the first game. But then it was better,” Schmiedlova said. “I wasn’t nervous after that and was just taking it point by point. Usually I don’t like playing aggressive players like her as much, because I can’t play as aggressively as them and I feel like I’m always defending, but I did very well. It was maybe one of the best matches I’ve played.”

Schmiedlova took command of the match from the start and rallied back from a 3-1 deficit in the second set to secure the straight sets win 6-4, 6-3. It was her first ever title win and she hopes to return to defend it in a year’s time.

“It’s hard to know because it’s far away, but I really want to, because this tournament is very special to me. Last year I won my first WTA main draw match here, and this year I won my first WTA title here, so I definitely want to come back. So hopefully I will be back.”

The doubles title went to Ysaline Bonaventure and Demi Schuurs, who defeated Gioia Barbieri and Karin Knapp 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 to lift the title.
