World No. 2 Maria Sharapova has not played a match since her surprising loss to Daria Gavrilova at the Miami Masters event and it looks as though she will spend some time on the sidelines before returning to professional competition.

Sharapova appears to have suffered a leg injury that will force her out of this weekend’s Fed Cup tie.

“My team and I specially changed my timetable so that I could represent my country in the semi-final,” she said. “However, unfortunately I picked up a leg injury and it did not allow me to be in the best condition to get ready for this tie.”

“I need to be at the top of my game in order to help my team and play to the best of my ability in the Fed Cup semi-finals against such strong opponents.

“Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to prepare.”

The Russian superstar was most recently seen in Miami, where she lost in straight sets to Gavrilova. The Russian wildcard took command of the contest early on, as she found a break while up 4-3 and closed out the opening set in one hour and eight minutes. However, the second set was more of a breeze, as she cruised to a 3-0 lead before finishing the match 7-6(4), 6-3.

Sharapoca is still expected to compete at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany.
