Roger Federer vs Marcel Granollers Preview – French Open 2015 Round 2
17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer breezed into the second round of the French Open on Sunday afternoon and will now attempt to further his 2015 campaign in Paris when he meets Spain’s Marcel Granollers. This will mark the fourth time these two competitors cross paths on the professional tour, with Federer leading the head-to-head series with an unblemished 3-0 record.
In an impressive showing on court, Federer defeated Alejandro Falla in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the following round at Roland Garros. The Swiss star struck 42 winners and eight aces to lose out the match in straightforward fashion. He also advanced his overall record to 26-5 this season.
“I’m not sure that the first round is any different,” Federer said. “I think that as we go through the tournament, then we probably feel that we are more and more satisfied. But the first round is a bit like I want to win the first round, to be in the tournament and not to go back home immediately, to be one of the first ten players to go back home. So that’s the whole idea about it. That is, you want to play a good match and then focus on the future. That’s when I will start enjoying this moment.”
Federer’s second round opponent, Marcel Granollers, reached that stage of the tournament with a straight sets win against qualifier Matthias Bachinger. He won the match 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(7) to set up the encounter against Federer.
This marks the fourth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour and the first time so far this season. Federer holds a 3-0 lead in the series, two of which took place in Dubai and the most recent at the US Open. Granollers has only ever taken one set off Federer and this is set to be their first ever meeting on clay.
