Djokovic, Wawrinka In Toronto Third-Round Play Thursday
Every singles player competes on day four
For the first time since 2002, four Americans (Jared Donaldson, Ryan Harrison, Rajeev Ram and Jack Sock) have advanced to the third round at the Rogers Cup. The last quartet to do so was Taylor Dent, Todd Martin, Andy Roddick and Pete Sampras. It is also the first time since 2004 Miami (Martin, Roddick, Andre Agassi and Vince Spadea) that four Americans have reached the Round of 16 at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament.
Those in action on Thursday include qualifiers Donaldson, who posted a surprise second-round victory over Fabio Fognini, and Ryan Harrison, who scored a big win over top-ranked American John Isner. Donaldson will have a difficult contest against home favorite and No. 4 seed Milos Raonic, while Harrison takes on another big server in No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych.
The third qualifier remaining in the draw is also the oldest man in the field, 37-year-old Radek Stepanek, who is set to play top seed and World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. Stepanek, who turns 38 in November, has a 1-11 FedEx ATP Head 2 Head record against Djokovic. Three qualifiers also advanced to the third round at Montréal in 2015 (Ernests Gulbis, Donald Young, Mikhail Youzhny).
Kicking off play on Centre Court is No. 3 seed Kei Nishikori, who takes on Rajeev Ram. That match is followed by a clash between No. 16 seed Jack Sock and No. 2 seed Stan Wawrinka. The final day session match on Centre Court will feature doubles action from Bob and Mike Bryan, who take on the first-time doubles team of Max Mirnyi and Marcin Matkowski. Last week’s winner in Washington, Gael Monfils, is second on Grandstand as he faces No. 7 seed David Goffin.
