Granollers/Dodig Through To Last Eight At Roland Garros

Seventh seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcel Granollers continued their strong clay-court season by reaching the quarter-finals on Saturday at Roland Garros. Joining them in the last eight are 16^th seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah, and a host of first-time Grand Slam quarter-finalists.

Dodig/Granollers saw off 11^th seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Dodig prevailed at this event in 2015 (w/Melo) and Granollers was runner-up in 2014 (w/M. Lopez).

This is their fourth quarter-final on clay this year, having finished runners-up at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Rome, and recorded quarter-final showings at Masters 1000 events in Monte-Carlo and Madrid. They will play Ryan Harrison and Michael Venus or Indian duo Purav Raja and Divij Sharan for a place in the last eight.

Cabal/Farah came within two points of falling to David Marrero and Tommy Robredo, but rallied to win 6-7(3), 7-6(3), 6-4. Marrero/Robredo served for the match at 5-4 in the second set.

This is Farah’s first-quarter-final in Paris, but Cabal reached the 2011 final (w/Schwank). They have already reached five ATP World Tour finals on clay this year, winning in Buenos Aires and Munich, and scoring runner-up finishes in Rio de Janeiro, Budapest and Geneva.

Next up for the Colombian duo are Julio Peralta and Horacio Zeballos, who took out Andres Molteni and Adil Shamasdin 7-5, 6-2. Zeballos reached the Roland Garros semi-finals in 2013 (w/Cuevas), but 35-year-old Peralta had only won a single Grand Slam match prior to this week. Peralta/Zeballos took the title this April in Houston.

Rogerio Dutra Silva and Paolo Lorenzi continued their dream run by defeating Czech duo Roman Jebavy and Jiri Vesely 6-4, 6-2. Neither player had reached the round of 16 in doubles at a Grand Slam prior to this week. Dutra Silva won his first ATP World Tour doubles title on home soil this February in Sao Paulo (w/Sa).

Santiago Gonzalez and Donald Young moved into the last eight by defeating Aussie duo Nick Kyrgios and Jordan Thompson 6-4, 6-4. This is Young’s first Grand Slam quarter-final and the first for Gonzalez since the Australian Open in 2012. Next up for them are fifth seeds Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares or ninth seeds Rohan Bopanna and Cuevas.
