Nadal in Spain's Davis Cup squad after injury

  • Posted: Mar 27, 2018

Rafael Nadal could return from a hip injury next week after being named in Spain’s Davis Cup squad.

Nadal, 31, has not played competitively since pulling out of his Australian Open quarter-final against Marin Cilic in January.

He had planned to play in last month’s Acapulco Open before withdrawing, and then pulled out of the ATP Masters events in Indian Wells and Miami.

“Rafa is getting better and training more,” captain Sergi Bruguera said.

he added: “There is still a week and a half for the games to start and there is time.”

Despite not playing since January, Nadal will return to action as the world number one after Roger Federer was beaten in the Miami Open second round this week.

Spain, who knocked Great Britain out of the competition last month, host Germany on Nadal’s favoured clay in Valencia from 6-8 April.

Roberto Bautista Agut, Pablo Carreno Busta, Feliciano Lopez and David Ferrer have also been named in the team by Bruguera.

Miami Open: Nick Kyrgios & Fernando Verdasco row after Australian's 'lose' tweet

  • Posted: Mar 27, 2018

Nick Kyrgios and Spain’s Fernando Verdasco traded insults on social media after the Australian said he wanted his Tour rival to lose at the Miami Open.

Kyrgios called Verdasco “the saltiest dude” as the Spaniard argued with Thanasi Kokkinakis during his last-32 win over Kyrgios’ compatriot.

Verdasco responded by saying Kyrgios ‘lacked courage’ for later deleting his tweet, which also mocked Verdasco’s record against Australian opponents.

The pair could meet in the semi-finals.

Verdasco, ranked 39th in the world, argued with Kokkinakis in the final set of his 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-4) win after accusing the Australian qualifier’s father of talking during his serves.

The often-outspoken Kyrgios, 22, then tweeted: “I hope TK wins this match, Verdasco is the saltiest dude, must be frustrated at his past success against Aussies.”

Verdasco, 34, had lost his previous six matches against Australian players, including his two meetings with Kyrgios in 2015 and 2016, before beating Kokkinakis.

After the near three-hour match, Verdasco replied: “When you have the courage to put a tweet insulting another player you need to have the same to don’t delete it.”

That sparked another response from Kyrgios, who said: “I would honestly have told it to Fernando’s face, the reason I deleted my previous tweet was because I didn’t want to cause unwanted attention, but I’m just gonna leave this here. Thanks for blocking me, I’m sure that took a lot of courage x.”

Verdasco faces fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, who beat American Steve Johnson 6-4 6-4, in the last 16 on Tuesday.

Kyrgios breezed through with a 6-3 6-3 win over Fabio Fognini, setting up a last-16 match with German fourth seed Alexander Zverev.

Zverev, 20, rallied from a set down to beat Spain’s David Ferrer 2-6 6-2 6-4.

South Africa’s Kevin Anderson also reached the fourth round with a 4-6 6-2 6-3 win over Russia’s Karen Khachanov, while Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov upset 11th-seeded American Sam Querrey 6-4 3-6 7-5.

Tiafoe Or Berdych Set For Double Duty In Miami

Winner will challenge sixth seed Anderson in fourth round

Tomas Berdych or Frances Tiafoe will need to play two matches on Tuesday at the Miami Open presented by Itau after their third-round clash was suspended due to heavy rain at 2:13 a.m. local time. Tiafoe is leading 10th seed and 2010 finalist Berdych 6-7(2), 6-2, 5-4.

Berdych got off to a 3-0 lead, but American Tiafoe recovered and at 4-4, 40/0, rain suspended play on Grandstand. A brief rain shower delayed play early in the third set, which resulted in service breaks in the third and fourth games. After two hours and 36 minutes of action, bad weather intervened once again.

Berdych or Tiafoe will resume their match on Grandstand mid-afternoon Tuesday, prior to contesting a fourth-round encounter against sixth-seeded South African Kevin Anderson from around 6 p.m. local time.

Earlier in the day, Anderson, the top seed left in the top quarter of the draw, battled to a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory against No. 32 Karen Khachanov. The South African will have a chance to reach his second consecutive ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarter-final.

Anderson has reached the final at three of his five events this season, winning the New York Open (def. Querrey) and finishing runner-up at Pune (l. to Simon) and Acapulco (l. to Del Potro). The 31-year-old is attempting to make the quarter-final in Miami for the second time, after losing at that stage in 2011 against Novak Djokovic. He is now 16-4 on the season.

The South African faced a stern test against the 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals qualifier. But after getting broken in the opening set, he did not face a break point in the rest of the match.

Defending champion Konta loses to Williams at Miami Open

  • Posted: Mar 27, 2018

British number one Johanna Konta has been knocked out of the Miami Open in the fourth round by three-time champion Venus Williams.

Defending champion Konta, ranked 14th, won the first set but eventually lost 5-7 6-1 6-2.

The 26-year-old had beaten world number eight Williams in straight sets in the semi-finals 12 months ago.

Williams, 37, will play Monica Puig of Puerto Rico or fellow American Danielle Collins in the quarter-finals.

Konta saved set point to turn the first set – which lasted just over an hour – in her favour and take the early advantage.

But Williams, a 10-time Grand Slam singles champion, cruised through the second set to even the score, with Konta requiring a medical timeout before the deciding set.

The Briton hit three aces in a row to save a break point in the third set, but Williams continued her dominant comeback to serve for the match.

Elsewhere, US Open champion Sloane Stephens eased past Spanish third seed Garbine Muguruza to reach the last eight.

American Stephens – seeded 13th – wrapped up a 6-3 6-4 victory in one hour and 28 minutes.

Germany’s Angelique Kerber joined Stephens in the quarter-finals after defeating Yafan Wang of China 6-7 (1-7) 7-6 (7-5) 6-3, while Belarusian Victoria Azarenka beat Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-2 6-2.

Kyrgios Continues To Thrive In Miami

Kyrgios Continues To Thrive In Miami

Two-time defending semi-finalist to play Zverev or Ferrer

It’s safe to say that Nick Kyrgios has enjoyed playing in Miami. It’s where he advanced to his first two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-finals the past two seasons — in his first two appearances at the tournament, no less.

And if the Australian’s start this year has been a sign of the future, Kyrgios could be in for another big run at Crandon Park. The 22-year-old cruised past recent Sao Paulo champion and the No. 15 seed, Fabio Fognini, 6-3, 6-3 on Monday in 66 minutes to move into the Round of 16 at the Miami Open presented by Itau.

After emerging from a battle between two semi-finalists from last year’s tournament in South Florida, Kyrgios is now 10-2 in Miami, as he continues pursuing a maiden Masters 1000 title. This is his third Top 20 win of the season, and he advances to play fourth seed Alexander Zverev or No. 28 David Ferrer, who are competing in the evening session.

It is Kyrgios’ third tournament of the season, and his first since the Australian Open. The World No. 20 won his fourth ATP World Tour title to begin the campaign at the Brisbane International presented by Suncorp, his first trophy on home soil.

Monday’s first-time FedEx ATP Head2Head matchup between the two Top 20 players set up to be a blockbuster, but it was Kyrgios who controlled play and seized his opportunities. While the No. 17 seed did not allow the Italian a break point in the match, the right-hander broke at three of five opportunities, even though Fognini lost just three points on his first serve (18/21). Kyrgios has yet to face break point in the tournament.
