Jack Sock Claims Maiden Title in Houston

Jack Sock Claims Maiden Title in Houston

Jack Sock

The first American in the latest generation of male tennis athletes has officially won his maiden title on the ATP World Tour. Ina battle of fellow countrymen, Jack Sock defeated his older counterpart Sam Querrey in a generational battle that signaled the transition to a new era of players from the United States.

The youngster, who is already a doubles Grand Slam champion, defeated Querrey in straight sets to lift the Houston title at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship final. He won the match 7-6(9), 7-6(2) to earn the victory in 1 hour and 45 minutes.

“It feels incredible,” said Sock. “Clay is my favourite surface. It feels surreal. It feels incredible, and to have friends and family here to share it with me feels even better.”

After being sidelined for the past few moths with a torn pelvic muscle that required surgery, Sock returned to the tour in emphatic fashion, as he won the doubles title in Indian Wells, reached the final in Miami and now won his maiden ATP World Tour title.

“I feel I competed well and took care of my serve very well,” said Sock. “On this surface against these players and the tough field that it was, to only get broken a handful of times is not easy.”

Sock takes home $88,800 in prize money and 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points, while Querrey took home $46,750 and 150 ranking points.

“Jack’s tough,” said Querrey. “He has a big forehand and on heavy clay like that, he’s a tough guy to beat… that’s my first final in a long time, so I’m feeling good.”

Roger Federer

After the completion of the Miami Masters, all eyes point to France for the Monte-Carlo Masters. The event had long been dominated by Rafael Nadal, winning eight times in a row from 2005-2012. This run was finally ended in 2013 when Novak Djokovic won in straight sets in the final while David Ferrer’s quarter final victory over Nadal ensured he would go a second year without picking up the trophy.

Contenders

With any top level clay tournament, it feels like there are only two contenders for the title especially if they are on opposite sides of the draw. As eight time winner, Nadal has to go into the tournament as favourite but Novak Djokovic is closing the gap each year. Nadal will be eager to end his two year drought at the tournament but has shown he is vulnerable once more after ending his 2014 early through injury. Losing to Fabio Fognini in Rio in February will see more of those outside the elite fancying their chances – especially after Nicolas Almagro ended a long losing streak in Barcelona last year. When it comes to big tournaments on clay, he is still the man to beat but his stranglehold is weakening a bit.

2013’s winner Novak Djokovic remains second favourite and the most likely player to defeat Nadal on clay, whatever the venue. He has won the last two best of three matches (Rome ’14, Monte Carlo ’13) but came up short each of the last three years at Roland Garros. Nadal’s exit in the quarter finals should have led to Djokovic taking a second straight title but Roger Federer has remained a tough foe for the Serb, going 4-4 since the beginning of last year. A comeback win against Nadal in the Rome final ensured he didn’t go winless on clay last year.

Last year’s winner Stanislas Wawrinka was still riding the high of his first slam by this point and took advantage of a draw that saw him face neither Nadal or Djokovic to win his first Masters 1000 event with a three set victory over Roger Federer in the final. However, his clay form following that had been very sketchy with losses to Dominic Thiem, Tommy Haas and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Similarly poor losses in recent weeks suggest a turnaround is needed sharpish if the Swiss No.2 is to be a contender in just under a months time.

Roger Federer has not won a clay Masters 1000 event since the controversial Madrid 2012 tournament on blue clay. Last year’s finalist has shown his capabilities against Djokovic on many an occasion but it feels like his chances of winning the title are dependant on a route that does not involve Rafael Nadal. Kei Nishikori was a winner in Barcelona before making the final in Madrid in his next tournament. Before his body failed him, the Japanese star was in control against Nadal before injury finally saw him retire midway through the third set. It would also be unfair to leave out David Ferrer, who defeated Nadal at the event last year, although his record against other top players leaves a lot to be desired.

 Nadal Monte Carlo

The European clay court season begins on Sunday with the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. Stanislas Wawrinka, who defeated Roger Federer in the final last year, looks to defend his title but will have a tough ask as seventh seed. Kei Nishikori and Andy Murray will be absent from this event, ensuring the currently ranked No.5 Rafael Nadal a top 4 seeding.

Novak Djokovic looks for his 23rd Masters 1000 title and 6th on clay at this event, hoping to repeat his 2013 title run. He opens against a qualifier or Nicolas Almagro, who has a 7-4 clay record in 2015 and has made at least the quarter final in three of his four events. Qualifiers hoping to avoid this place in the draw include Diego Schwartzman, Robin Haase and Benoit Paire. Djokovic will be looking to make his mark on this tournament as a statement of intent as he works towards gaining that elusive French Open trophy in June.

Article Continues Below Ad

With just a 2-8 tour record in since the beginning of 2013 on clay, it’s fair to say that the surface isn’t Bernard Tomic’s favourite. Lukas Rosol, a three times ATP finalist on the surface, should advance to the next round for a likely meeting with Ernests Gulbis even though the Latvian is struggling for form. Reports suggest that he has added former World No.4 Thomas Enqvist to his coaching setup.

11th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga faces a tough ask in only his third match of the year, taking on the in-form Sam Querrey. Querrey is a finalist in Houston, picking up impressive wins over Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco along the way. Tsonga is 2-1 against Querrey although they are yet to meet on clay. The winner of this clash will face either David Goffin or a qualifier.

Making his first appearance on the ATP Tour since March last year, Florian Mayer will face Mikhail Youzhny. With injuries keeping him out for the year, he is currently unranked and has used his protected ranking to enter the tournament. Mayer is 5-3 against Youzhny, but it would be a major ask to pull off a win after such a long lay off. Marin Cilic awaits the winner and should fancy his chances of tying the head to head up at 5-5 if he plays Youzhny as expected. If they meet as projected in the quarter finals, Cilic will be looking to win his first match against Djokovic at the twelfth time of asking.

Given his drop outside the top two, Rafael Nadal is vulnerable to the draw putting him up against Novak Djokovic before the final and this is just what has happened here with a 42nd Djokovic-Nadal ATP match on the cards in the semis. A series of surprising losses throughout the year so far, most recently to Fernando Verdasco in Miami, has yet again cast doubt upon Nadal’s long term place on the tour but given the way he continues to bounce back it would be foolish to write him off just yet. Assuming the Austrian makes it past wildcard Lucas Pouille, Nadal will fancy his chances of breaking down Dominic Thiem’s one handed backhand.

One of just three players to win two sets against Nadal at Roland Garros, John Isner could face the Spaniard in round three but he will have to make it past fellow American Steve Johnson. Martin Klizan, a finalist in Casablanca, is a possible second round opponent although he is 1-3 against Viktor Troicki but none of the meetings have been on clay.

It was David Ferrer that ensured Nadal would go two years without winning the title here after his long period of dominance with a surprisingly straight forward 7-6 6-4 victory in the quarter finals. Given Nadal’s struggles, Ferrer will fancy his chances for a repeat. He will first have to make his way past either Simone Bolelli or Victor Estrella Burgos. With a qualifier and Monegasque wildcard Benjamin Balleret between him and Ferrer, Gilles Simon should have no issues with making the third round. With just two wins in eight ATP matches, Simon will have his work cut out against a player he has never won a set on clay against.

With Nadal and Djokovic both in the top half, there is a great opportunity on offer for the top players in the bottom half of the draw. As fourth seed, Milos Raonic would be projected to make the semi finals but he has never made it past the quarter finals of a clay Masters 1000 in his career to date. With his draw, making it to the quarter finals shouldn’t be too taxing however. He begins with a qualifier or Joao Sousa.

Raonic is 2-0 on clay against Tommy Robredo, the first seed he may face in the draw. In addition to that, Raonic also defeated the Spaniard last time they met at Indian Wells last month. Robredo has won his last three against opening opponent Andreas Seppi. After retiring down 0-3 in Casablanca with a leg injury, Marcel Granollers may be far from 100% in his opener against Adrian Mannarino. Mannarino did very little on clay last year and by inflicting a seventh straight defeat on Granollers he will likely improve on his career high ranking of 31.

No.6 seed Tomas Berdych is 1-3 against Raonic although they are yet to play on clay. On his way to the quarter finals, Berdych did beat the remaining seed in this quarter in four sets. Roberto Bautista-Agut seems the likely opponent with two Germans probably between him and the Czech. Bautista-Agut begins with Benjamin Becker and then plays the winner of Philipp Kohlschreiber and Mikhail Kukushkin. Given his 9-1 record against Kohlschreiber, it’s likely Berdych would be hoping for the chance to extend that record in round three.

The final quarter is projected to see a repeat of the 2014 final which Stanislas Wawrinka once more hopes to be victorious over Roger Federer in. Jiri Vesely ended a seven match losing streak with his run to the semi finals in Casablanca and will look to take that momentum into his opener against Juan Monaco. While Wawrinka isn’t coming into the tournament still on an Australian Open high like last year, it would not be a surprise to see him make the final once more.

After losing every hard court match this year, Fabio Fognini will be glad to be back on his favoured clay. However, it will be a tough ask for him to go deep with his spot in the draw. He should have too much for Jerzy Janowicz but Grigor Dimitrov will be a good test for where the Italian is at right now. Dimitrov was a semi finalist in Rome and made the round of 16 at Monte Carlo last year. Dimitrov opens against Fernando Verdasco who is fresh off a semi final in Houston.

If Federer is to make it to the quarter finals, he will likely have to see off two Frenchmen with Jeremy Chardy or a qualifier up first. 14th seed Gael Monfils is projected to play Federer in the round of 16 but Borna Coric and Alexandr Dolgopolov are both extremely capable of pulling a shock, especially if Monfils is off his game.

Even now, Federer has proven he is capable of shocking Novak Djokovic (last year def. Djokovic 7-5 6-2 in SF) so there is plenty of intrigue in the final should Rafael Nadal fail to make it once more. Wawrinka is 1-10 against Djokovic/Nadal on clay and the one victory came by virtue of retirement during a 1st set tiebreak with Djokovic.

Angelique Kerber vs Madison Keys Preview – WTA Charleston 2015 Final

Angelique Kerber

A highly intriguing final has been set following a pair of dramatic final four matches in Charleston, as German No. 2 Angelique Kerber upset her fellow countrywoman Petkovic to secure her spot on Sunday against rising star Madison Keys. This marks the fourth time that these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, with Kerber leading the head-to-head series 2-1.

Watch the final match Live Here: Kerber vs Keys Live Streaming

In a match that many expected would favour the German No. 1 Andrea Petkovic, who was seeded third for this particular event, and has had a better year than her opponent across the net. She appeared to have the edge early on with an early break lead over Kerber but then lost 11 of the next 14 games to eventually lose in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

“I’m so close with Andrea. We’re really good friends. It’s always tough to play against someone like that,” Kerber said in her on-court interview (h/t WTA). “But I was just trying to focus on myself and my game. And I want to say congratulations to Andrea – she’s back in the top, and I wish her all the best.”

Awaiting the German in the final is Madison Keys, who defeated Lucie Hradecka to reach a new career-high ranking of No. 17 on Monday. It was definitely the less eventful of the two matches, as the American held serve strongly and had little trouble closing out the match in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.

“It’s always great when you can get off to a good start, and after that I just kept going with it. I was happy with how I stayed in the crosscourt rallies – that was definitely my biggest thing, staying in the rally and then changing direction on the right ball, then moving forward and taking time away.”

The last time that Keys and Kerber clashed was in the final of the 2014 Eastbourne Open, which turned out to be an absolutely sensational match-up; easily the best of the rivalry to date. It was also the match that Keys won to secure her first ever title on the tour. However, Kerber still leads the head-to-head series 2-1 and will look to follow up on a strong showing on Saturday to secure her latest title win.

Prediction: Madison Keys in Three Sets

It was not the prettiest of the matches, but world No. 1 Novak Djokovic managed to claw his way to an impressive and historic fifth title at the Miami Open with a three set victory over world No. 3 Andy Murray.

The rollercoaster encounter had several twists and turns, as well as a slew of breaks that had the crowd confused as to who had a grip on the match. However, with the tide against him, Djokovic managed to scrape by to a third set, where he stormed to the 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-0.

“I’m trying to enjoy the moment and also utilise this time of my career where I’m probably playing the tennis of my life, and I’m feeling confident and physically fit,” he said. “I’m trying to use that. That’s what I’m thinking about right now… I am aware that this cannot go forever. There is going to be eventually a change of generations, some players that are going to start playing better and be stronger.”

Djokovic is now the first player to complete the Indian Wells-Miami Open double on three separate occasions, and extended his head-to-head record over Murray to 18-8 in the process.

“I just have to try and keep working hard and see if there are a few things I can do differently, which might help,” Murray explained. “It’s tough, because it was obviously pretty brutal conditions out there. He was stronger than me at the end, for sure.”

The Serb took home $900,400 and 1,000 Emirates ATP Rankings points for his win, while earned $439,420.

Serena Williams

In a clearly lopsided encounter, Serena Williams crusied to her eighth title win at the Miami Open with a straight set victory over Carla Suaez Navarro in the tournament final on Saturday.

Williams became just the fourth WTA player to win a single WTA tournament more than eight time (according to the WTA) and is currently riding a 21-match win streak heading into April.

Overall, the American smashed 27 winners and only allowed Navarro to win five points in the second set to close out the entire match 6-2, 6-0 in 56 minutes.

“Congratulations to Carla. She’s had a fabulous two weeks,” she said. “This is just the beginning. I’m really proud of you – we always get along and it’s always great to see you do well, so congratulations.

“Thank you to all my fans – thank you for believing in me and supporting me all these years!”

The American’s last loss took place back in 2014, when she lost to Simona Halep in the round robin stage of the WTA Finals in Singapore.

Novak Djokovic vs Andy Murray Preview – Miami Open 2015 Final

Following their semi-final meeting at Indian Wells several weeks ago, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and British No. 1 Andy Murray will once again cross paths on the ATP World Tour, this time in the final of the Miami Open to determine who will lift the trophy this year. Both men have captured this title previously – Djokovic on three more occasions than his Scottish foe. The Serb has also bested Murray in the last six consecutive meetings to push his head-to-head lead to 17-8.

Faced with the tall task of beating American No. 1 John Isner, Djokovic needed to weather an early storm of serves, but once he cruised through the first set tiebreak, he settled into the match, hit third gear, and breezed into the final. He struck 10 aces, hit 25 winners and broke serve twice to close out the match 7-6(3), 6-2 in one hour and 30 minutes.

“I’m glad that I managed to realise everything that I intended tactically before the match,” said Djokovic. “It’s always tough to play somebody that serves that well. “At the end of the day, it is important to hang in there mentally, be patient… I used the court very well, and [I’m] pleased with the performance.”

Seeded third at this year’s event, Murray also needed straight sets to find his way into the final of the Miami Open. He defeated Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-4 in what was his 501st match win.

“I felt like I served well,” said Murray. “It was tricky from one end of the court. We’re basically serving right into the sun at that time of day, so I had to take a little bit off the serve. On the second serve it was very tough to see.”

While Murray has not defeated Djokovic since he lifted the historic Wimbledon title back in 2013, he remains a somewhat irrational hopeful against the Serbian star. Given that Murray spent the vast majority of 2014 recovering from his back surgery, he is yet to find his peak form; once he does, we may consider him once again a viable threat to the reigning kingpin on the ATP World Tour.

Prediction: Novak Djokovic in Three Sets

Serena Williams vs Carla Suarez Navarro Preview – Miami Open 2015 Final

Serena Williams vs Carla Suarez Navarro Preview – Miami Open 2015 Final

Serena Williams

Following an entertaining fortnight in Miami, the final of the tournament is official: world No. 1 and seven time champion Serna Williams will encounter resurgent Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro to determine who will lift the trophy on Saturday. Williams is undefeated in their four previous encounters in the head-to-head series, including a clay court win last season in Madrid.

At first, Williams’ match against Halep looked as though it would be a straightforward encounter, as the American rushed through the first set to an early lead. However, the Romanian rebounded in the second set when Williams’ unforced error count rose significantly. Yet in the end, the top seed found the crucial break near the end of the match and closed out the encounter 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

“I actually had a fun match,” Williams said. “I just feel it was on my racquet. I had chances in the second set but didn’t take them. That’s something I can’t do going into the Grand Slams coming up.”

“I really like her attitude on the court. I like how she gets pumped up. I like how she fights. I like how she plays. I just think it’s fun to watch and it’s different – it’s definitely a refreshing type of game.”

In an incredible story, an inspired Suarez Navarro reached a remarkable career accomplishment when she found her way into her first WTA Premier Mandatory (or higher) final with a victory over Germany’s Andrea Petkovic. She crusied to victory in straight sets with much help from Petkovic’s unforced error count (32). She won the match 6-3, 6-3 to set up an enticing final against the American.

“I feel so happy. It’s so important for me,” the Spaniard said of the breakthrough. “I was practicing and working all year with my team for a moment like this.”

This marks the fifth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Williams leading the series with an impenetrable 4-0 record. While the Spaniard is playing some of the best tennis of her career, it is still difficult to envision her actually toppling the world No. 1 player on Saturday.

Following their fourth round meeting at Indian Wells a couple of weeks ago at Indian Wells, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and American No. 1 John Isner will meet again to determine who will advance to the final of the 2015 Miami Open. The two have crossed paths eight times previously, with Djokovic leading the head-to-head series 6-2.

In a much cleaner performance than his previous encounters in Miami this week, Novak Djokovic defeated an in-form David Ferrer in straight sets to work his way into the semi-final round in Miami. The only hiccup in the match came during the beginning, as Djokovic suffered from a slow start and quickly fell 1-4 before he regrouped and never looked back. He eventually closed out the match 7-5, 7-5 in under two hours.

In an impressive boost for American tennis, John Isner is through to the Miami Open semi-final after he defeated Kei Nishikori in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. It was an emphatic performance from the towering big-sever and he managed to hit 13 aces to close out the match in one hour and 10 minutes.

“Playing him is always a challenge,” Isner said of a possible matchup with Djokovic. “He’s the greatest player in the world right now, hands down. I played well against him last week in Indian Wells and he beat me in a tight two set match. “I’m going to have to bring that level and some if I do play against him, and I believe I can do that. He’s got a tough match [tonight] against one of the best competitors or sport has.”

This marks the ninth time that these two competitors will meet on the ATP World Tour, with Djokovic leading the series 6-2. Isner’s only two wins against the Serb were on American soil, including a semi-final win over Djokovic at this very event in 2012. While he is capable of another upset, it is difficult to determine whether the American will follow up on his impressive week so far on the tour.

Prediction: Novak Djokovic in Three Sets

Andy Murray vs Tomas Berdych Preview and Prediction – Miami Open 2015 SF

Tomas Berdych

An interesting semi-final match-up is scheduled to take place on Friday afternoon in Miami, as British No. 1 Andy Murray and Czech No. 1 Tomas Berdych meet for the twelfth time on the professional tour. While Murray holds the better record at the Australian Open, he trails Berdych 5-6 in Head to Head series.

Third seed Andy Murray is nearly through to his fourth Miami Open final, following his three set victory over Dominic Thiem on Wednesday afternoon. After weathering an aggressive and inspired start from the Austrian, Murray rebounded effectively to close out the match comfortably 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. After accomplishing the 500-win milestone, Murray will now look to reach his fourth Miami Open final when he meets Berdych in the semi-final.

“I expected a tough match,” Murray said. “He’s beaten some very good players this week already… When you let him dictate the points, he hits the ball as hard off each side as anyone.

Unlike his upcoming opponent, Berdych managed to beat his quarter-final opponent, Juan Monaco in straightforward fashion. He beat the Argentinian 6-3, 6-4 to set up his final four berth against the Scot. Given that he has reached the Miami Open final before, the Czech will be motivated to go even further and lift the title.

“What’s positive for me is that I think [Murray] played a very good tournament, very good tennis, and I managed to find a way to win a set,” Berdych said of his most recent meeting with the World No. 4. “It’s definitely going to be my goal to stick to the game plan and execute it.”

This marks the twelfth time that Murray and Berdych will cross paths on the professional tour, with Berdych leading the series 6-5. Murray won their most recent encounter at the Australian Open semi-final and will look to add to that momentum in 2015 en route to yet another Miami Open final.

Prediction: Andy Murray in Three Sets
