While the regular season came to an end last month, world No. 6 Agnieszka Radwanska took part in an exhibition match against former world No. 1 Martina Hingis in a singles match at the Champions Tennis League.

It was a pivotal contest that would determine whether Radwanksa’s Pune Marathas or Hingis’ Hyderbad Aces would make it to the final to play Delhi Dreams. Hingis broke three times in the match –once more than her Polish adversary – to defeat her 6-4 and give the edge to the Hyderbad.

Earlier in the day, Mark Philippoussis beat Pat Cash 6-3, while Radwanska and Marcos Baghdatis defeated Hingis and Mihail Youzhny 6-3 I the doubles match.

One of the most heartwarming stories that took place during the US Open took place when the unseeded pairing of Hingis and Pennetta, who defeated two of the biggest seeds at the tournament, No.5 seeds Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik and No.3 seeds Cara Black and Sania Mirza, to reach the final of the tournament – Hingis’ first doubles final since 1998.

The former No. 1 won 9 Grand Slam titles in doubles throughout her career.

World No. 6 Eugenie Bouchard has officially parted ways with her coach of eight years Nick Saviano, according to a press release posted on his tennis academy’s website.

“Genie and I have decided that it is best for us to end our player-coach relationship and to move in different directions for 2015,”

The decision to part ways comes after Bouchard took part in a breakthrough season on the WTA tour – one that saw her win the Most Improved Player award at the end of the season. She reached the semi-final round of three of the four Grand Slam this year, and peaked with her first appearance at the Wimbledon final in July.

Bouchard is also the first Canadian to reach the Wimbledon final and the first to reach a career-high No. 5 in the rankings. While she also managed to qualify for the WTA finals in Singapore, she failed to win a single match at the event.

While Saviano did not specify a reason for the split, but it appears that it was a civil and mutual one.

“This past year travelling with Genie to all of the majors has been a wonderful experience with memories I will cherish for a lifetime,” Saviano said.”I have no doubt that Genie will accomplish great things.”

Federer US Open The Trophy Cabinet: A Quick Analysis of Roger Federer’s Career Achievements

After spending the last 15 years of his career collecting trophies and gradually adding to his undeniable legacy, Roger Federer secured the only title that has eluded him throughout that illustrious career: the Davis Cup title.

The achievement is a remarkable one considering Switzerland has only been in the final on two occasions in the tournament’s 115-year history. Their first was in 1992, where John McEnroe’s US team defeated the Swiss team 3-1 – the same result that the Swiss team handed the French on home soil this time around.

With the Davis Cup title added to his mantle, Federer can breath a sigh of relief and know that his accomplishments in tennis are unlikely to be matched again.

However, what exactly are his achievements? Here is a quick breakdown of all that the world No. 2 has accomplished over his career.

–302 weeks as World No. 1
No other competitor in ATP history has spent as many weeks atop the mountain as Roger Federer has during his tenure as world No. 1. With 302 weeks on top, Federer is ahead of Connors (268), Lendl (270) and Sampras (286).

–996 Match Wins
Roger Federer is four wins away from reaching the 1000 wins milestone on the professional tour – an achievement that few can have the pleasure of accomplishing it.

–82 Titles
The world No. 2 is the only player apart from Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendel to win over 80 titles throughout his career.

–23 Masters 1000 titles
Federer is behind only Rafael Nadal in Masters 1000 events won, as the Swiss star is four titles behind Nadal (27) for 1st place. He is also just three titles ahead of Novak Djokovic (20) and one ahead of Ivan Lendel (22).

-17 Grand Slam Titles
Federer stands alone as the only male player to have achieved 17 Grand Slam titles over the span of his career. While he has not added to that record since his Wimbledon title in 2012, Federer did reach the final at SW19 again this season and will certainly be on the hunt for more titles in 2015.

He is also the first ever men’s singles player to have reached 10 consecutive grand slam finals and a total of 25 grand slam finals.

–2 Olympic Medals
While Federer is yet to win Olympic Gold in singles competition, he managed to win Gold in the doubles competition with partner Stan Wawrinka in the 2008 Beijing Games. While he participated in the final in the 2012 London Games at Wimbledon, he lost to Andy Murray, who would go on to win his maiden Grand Slam at the US Open a month later.

–Davis Cup
Finally, Federer was able to add the one title missing from his illustrious mantle and cement his spot as arguably the greatest male competitor to ever step on a tennis court. Whoever is ambitious enough to attempt to overtake Federer will have quite the treacherous journey ahead of them.

After ending her partnership with her coach following the conclusion of the season for the second consecutive year, breakthrough star and world No. 3 Simona Halep announced that she has hired fellow Romanian Victor Ionita as her main coach for the coming season.

However, the more interesting addition to Halep’s team is Thomas Hogstedt, former coach to Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki, who will serve as a coaching consultant for the early portion of the season.

Hogstedt, who began working with Sloane Stephens in July after parting ways with Caroline Wozniacki, will join Halep for the first three tournaments of year: the Shenzhen Open, Sydney International and Australian Open.

Sports Illustrated was first to announce the hires.

Halep took part in another breakthrough season in 2014, as she followed up on her gradual rise the previous year with several remarkable accomplishments. The Romanian reached her first Grand Slam final at the French Open, reached the final of WTA Finals, and ended her season ranked below Serena Williams and Sharapova at world No. 3.

Her new coach, Ionita, worked with fellow Romanian Sorana Cirstea through a big season last year and will now transition to the top-ranked player in Romania. Given that Halep’s split with coach Wim Fissette was done to allow a transition to a Romanian coach, she has certainly lived up to her word.

Halep, who is already busy with off-season training, begins her season at the Shenzhen Open in January.

ATP Tour11 ATP Tour Announces Geneva Open to Replace Dusseldorf in 2015

The ATP announced that Geneva will host a 250-level event starting next season. The tournament will replace the Dusseldorf event in Germany, and will take place at the Tennis Club de Genève at the Parc des Eaux-Vives.

“We’re delighted to welcome an internationally renowned city like Geneva back onto the ATP World Tour from 2015. The Tennis Club de Genève is a beautiful club that carries a lot of history in the sport. This new event will make an excellent addition to the ATP clay court season in the Spring.”

This will mark the first time a professional tennis tournament is held in the city in 24 years. Bjorn Borg claimed his last title at the Geneva Open’s predecessor, the Barlcays Open, and has also featured a variety of tennis greats at the event.

“Geneva is a beautiful city and the Tennis Club de Genève is the most traditional Club situated in the wonderful Parc des Eaux-Vives. Not only did it stage a prestigious tournament for years in the 80s, but Swiss tennis in general has produced some of the best players over the years; winners of Grand Slams, Olympic Medals and now competing for the Davis Cup title.”

The Geneva Open is scheduled to take place between May 16-23

While the focus on Sunday afternoon was on the Davis Cup Final, which saw Roger Federer complete his trophy collection with the one title previously absent from his mantle, another tournament finale took place that day: the ATP Challengers Final. There, Diego Schwartzman defeated wild card Guilherme Clezar to win his fifth and final title of the season.

Schwartzman needed just 1 hour and 13 minutes to dispatch the eighth seed 6-2, 6-3 in front of a boisterous crowd in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The title win ties him for first place with five crowns and will find himself in the ATP Top 70 for the first time in his career.

“It was an incredible week,” said Schwartzman, who earns 110 Emirates ATP Rankings points and $84,900. “The tournament was great, well organised. I’m very happy. Since the first round, I managed to play a good level of tennis. I played all matches really well. I got into the final with a lot of confidence. Clezar was a little bit nervous and I took advantage of that. My technique was great too, all my strokes were going in.”

This was Schwartzman’s second meeting against Clezar this week, as he beat him with a similar scoreline in the round robin stage of the event.

“I will get into a lot of tournaments next year. We have the Australian Open in January. It was great to win this title, because of the prize money and also climbing up the (Emirates ATP Rankings).”

Roger Federer lived through another historic moment in his illustrious career on Sunday afternoon when he helped his country reach their first ever Davis Cup title against home favourites France in Lille.

It was his country’s first team title in the 115-year history of the tournament, and only their second attempt in the final to win the crown. A word record crowd of 27, 448 was in attendance for the historic moment – one that saw Federer collapse to the ground in pure joy following match point.

“We fought hard for it. I’ve been playing this game for almost 15 years now and I’ve never come as close as this past weekend. I was happy I was able to stay calm and play a good match when I had to.”

It was a contest that lasted a total of 1 hour and 42 minutes, as Federer dispatched Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 with minimal resistance from the former French No. 1. Federer was originally scheduled to face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the fourth rubber but Tsonga was forced to bow out of the match with an arm injury. And while Gasquet’s two previous victories over Federer (2-12 h2h against the Swiss No. 1) were on clay, he simply stood no chance against the inspired Federer on this particular occasion.

“Everybody worked really hard to get me match-ready. Stan put in so much effort over the years and he played an unbelievable weekend and that is what gave me the opportunity today. I’m aware of that.

“This one is for the boys.”

With the conclusion of the 2014 season, professional tennis wil resume in 42 days at the start of January in Brisbane, Australia. Federer, who reached the final there this year, will likely return at the start of the season.

On Sunday afternoon, 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer added another title to his illustrious cabinet – one that had been abscent for the previous 15 years of his remarkable career: the Davis Cup title.

While he was expected to face French No. 1 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the fourth rubber, Tosnga was forced to bow out of the event with an arm injury and was immediately replaced by Richard Gasquet, who failed to win more than eight games in the entire match.

“Everybody worked really hard to get me match-ready. Stan put in so much effort over the years and he played an unbelievable weekend and that is what gave me the opportunity today. I’m aware of that.

Richard Gasquet12 Gasquet Disappointed with Doubles Performance: I Could Have Played Better

While there aren’t many teams capable of earning victories over the Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka duo when you are at their best, Richard Gasquet was still disappointed with his lackluster showing in the Davis Cup doubles rubber on Saturday afternoon.

“I could have played better,” said Gasquet afterwards. “I was not able to make the breakpoints I had in the second set. If we would have had a break, of course that doesn’t mean we would have won, but we would have been in a better position for winning this second set where we had five breakpoints.”

The Swiss duo had the benefit of some quick training from Bryan Brothers coach David Macpherson ahead of the rubber and that certainly benefited their performance against the French duo. While Benneteau appeared to be fit for playing, Gasquet appeared lost and never found his way back into the match.

“I’m disappointed with the match, but the opponents played extremely well. They are extremely strong. They had very good returns. They played very interesting combinations. It was impressive.”

French captain Arnaud Clement is well aware of the task at hand for his singles players, Tsonga and potentially Monfils. If the French team is to lift the title on home soil, they can no longer afford to concede a point fro the remainder of the tie.

“Of course it’s going to be very, very difficult now, with a lot of hope in these doubles,” said Clement. “We have to do something big, very big. We still have a chance, and we’re going to try as hard as possible. It’s a big challenge, big challenge for us, to beating No. 2 and 4 in the world in the final of Davis Cup.”

“But even if we have a little chance, we’re going to try.”
