Three years after one of the best tournaments of his career, Nick Kyrgios is back in the Citi Open final.

The 2019 Washington champion battled past Mikael Ymer 7-6(4), 6-3 on Saturday to reach the championship match of the ATP 500 for the second time. He will play top seed Andrey Rublev or Japanese lefty Yoshihito Nishioka for the title.

“Honestly I didn’t play anywhere near my best tennis today and I don’t know. The role was reversed, the past couple matches I’ve been on paper, rankings-wise the underdog in my past couple matches, but today I definitely felt like the favourite,” Kyrgios said in his on-court interview. “I served pretty solid. Obviously my winning percentage behind my first serve would have been high, but from the back of the court I didn’t play well at all.”

On Friday, the Australian won two matches and saved five match points in the second of those clashes, in the quarter-finals against Frances Tiafoe. Kyrgios did not have his back up against the wall again, but he did have to work hard to oust Ymer.

The Swede, who ousted former World No. 1 Andy Murray in the first round, used his speed and defensive skills to great effect throughout the week and did so again on Saturday, finding small openings with sublime backhand passing shots. 

But the match was on Kyrgios’ racquet, and the 27-year-old relied on his big serving and baseline power in key moments to triumph after one hour and 35 minutes. He was not at his flying best, showing consistent frustration throughout the first set, but his serve kept him out of danger as he did not face a break point. Kyrgios did not hit 35 aces like he did against Tiafoe, striking 10, but it was good enough for the victory.

“The difference was he stands on the fast and he makes you play that extra ball. He’s an incredible athlete and I really wasn’t expecting him to be that fast,” Kyrgios said. “Maybe next time I might have a couple different tactics when I play him, maybe not to try and out rally him, maybe come forward a little bit more. But it was a tough-fought semi-final and I’m just happy to be in the final once again.”

The first set could have gone either way, with the pair tied at 4/4 in the first-set tie-break. In an uncharacteristic Kyrgios rally, which featured plenty of slices between the two, the Australian prevailed after 24 shots to seize the mini break and eventually, the set.

Kyrgios struggled to break through on Ymer’s serve until 4-3 in the second set, when he finally earned the match’s only break by flicking a forehand half volley from no-man’s land crosscourt and out of the reach of the lunging Swede.

The World No. 63 is up to No. 42 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings. If Kyrgios lifts the trophy on Sunday, he will climb to No. 37.

The world’s best return to ATP Masters 1000 action this week as the ATP Tour visits Montreal for the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers.

World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev leads the field in Quebec, where he is seeking to defend the crown he won in Toronto in 2021. Carlos Alcaraz chases his third Masters 1000 title of the season and is the second seed on his Canadian Masters 1000 debut, while Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov will look to channel the support of their home fans.

1) Medvedev Seeking More Canadian Success: Medvedev captured the title when the Canadian ATP Masters 1000 event was played in Toronto last season. With the action set to take place in Montreal this week, the 26-year-old will look to maintain his strong hard court record and clinch his 13th title on the surface. The top seed, who advanced to his first Masters 1000 championship match in Montreal in 2019, could face Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios in a blockbuster second-round clash if the Australian overcomes Sebastian Baez in the first round.

2) Alcaraz Makes Montreal Debut: #NextGenATP Spaniard Alcaraz will make his debut in Quebec as he looks to build on his standout season. The 19-year-old lifted Masters 1000 trophies in Miami and Madrid earlier this season and arrives in Canada off the back of runs to clay-court finals in Hamburg and Umag. The second seed, who currently sits at a career-high No. 4 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, will face American Tommy Paul or Canadian wild card Vasek Pospisil in his opening match.

3) Tsitsipas, Ruud Make Hard-Court Returns: Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud have traditionally produced their best tennis on clay courts in recent years, having earned 12 titles on the surface between them. However, Ruud showed strong hard-court pedigree earlier this season when he reached the final in Miami, while the Greek Tsitsipas has won four titles on hard courts, including the Nitto ATP Finals crown in 2019.

Both will be aiming to quickly find their groove in Montreal as they prepare to compete on hard for the first time since April in Miami. Third seed Tsitsipas, who reached the semi-finals in Toronto last year, will face a qualifier in his first match, while fourth seed Ruud takes on Slovakian Alex Molcan or American Mackenzie McDonald.

4) Felix & Shapo Carry Home Hopes: The duo that led Team Canada to ATP Cup glory in January return home for another shot at ending the wait for a home champion at the Canadian Masters 1000 event. Auger-Aliassime, who clinched his maiden tour-level in Rotterdam in Feburary, is making his second appearance in Montreal, having advanced to the third round in 2019. Shapovalov has fond memories on home soil after he upset Rafael Nadal during a dream run to the semi-finals on debut in 2017. Sixth seed Auger-Aliassime begins against Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka or a qualifier and Shapovalov takes on Atlanta champion Alex de Minaur.

5) Three-Time Champ Murray Takes On Fritz: Andy Murray will look to regain momentum when he takes to court at an event he has tasted so much success at. The former World No. 1 captured the title in Montreal in 2009 and 2015, while he also triumphed in Toronto in 2010. The Scot faces a tricky opener in Canada, though, with 10th seed Taylor Fritz awaiting in the first round.

The American has enjoyed a strong season, highlighted by his maiden Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells. The 24-year-old, who is on the cusp of cracking the Top 10 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, will be looking to advance beyond the first round in Canada for the first time when he takes on Murray in their first ATP Head2Head meeting.

6) Can Red-Hot Kyrgios Maintain Form?: Nick Kyrgios will arrive in Quebec in red-hot form, having backed up the run to his maiden Grand Slam final at Wimbledon by advancing to the semi-finals in Washington, where he is still competing for the title. The Australian, who is making his fourth appearance in Montreal, holds a 25-7 record on the season (entering the Washington semi-finals) and will look to improve that further when he plays Baez in the first round.

7) Rublev & Sinner Look To Build On Recent Success: Andrey Rublev has lifted three tour-level titles this season and is in strong form, having advanced to the semi-finals in Washington last week. The 24-year-old is seeking his maiden ATP Masters 1000 crown this week and will begin against Daniel Evans or Filip Krajinovic. After clinching four titles in 2021, Italian Jannik Sinner returned to the winners’ circle in Umag last month, defeating Alcaraz in a thrilling final on clay. The 20-year-old will be keen to build on his recent success in Montreal, where he faces a qualifier on debut. 

8) Pepperstone ATP Race To Turin Heats Up: With the ATP Tour season ticking into August, the Pepperstone ATP Race To Turin has started to heat up. With Auger-Aliassime currently occupying the last qualification spot in eighth, Fritz, Hubert Hurkacz, Matteo Berrettini and Cameron Norrie will be looking close the gap and increase their chances of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals in November.

The 11th-placed Hurkacz reached the quarter-finals in Toronto last season and begins against former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka or Emil Ruusuvuori, with 12th-placed Italian Berrettini starting against Pablo Carreno Busta. Great Britain’s Norrie is 13th and has won two tour-level hard-court titles this season. The 26-year-old will play Brandon Nakashima in the first round.

9) #NextGenATP Stars In Action: Dane Holger Rune and American Nakashima will look to boost their hopes of qualifying for the Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals for the second consecutive year when they make their debuts in Quebec. The 19-year-old Rune is fourth in the Pepperstone ATP Race To Milan and will open against a qualifier, while seventh-placed Nakashima plays Norrie. Nakashima has enjoyed strong results in North America, reaching finals on hard in Los Cabos and Atlanta last season.

10) Ram/Salisbury Lead Doubles Field: Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury will lead the doubles field as the top seeds as they seek to retain their title in Canada, having triumphed in Toronto last year. However, the American-British tandem will face stiff competition from second seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos and third seeds Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski. Granollers and Zeballos lifted the trophy in Montreal in 2019 and are four-time Masters 1000 titlists, while Koolhof and Skupski have won a Tour-leading five titles this campaign. 

Alexander Zverev announced on Saturday the launch of the Alexander Zverev Foundation, which will support children with diabetes and provide medication for those in developing countries with the condition.

“Today, the Alexander Zverev Foundation has officially come to life, supporting children with type 1 diabetes and helping people prevent type 2 diabetes by living a healthy and active life,” Zverev wrote in his announcement. “Our mission is to provide insulin and life-saving medicine to children in developing countries and those in need.”

As part of his announcement, the German revealed he is diabetic.

“As a type 1 diabetic myself, I want to encourage children with diabetes to never give up on their dreams no matter what others might say to you,” Zverev added.

The 25-year-old ended his post with a quote: “The only limit is the one you set yourself.”

Zverev is currently recovering from a right ankle injury he suffered during Roland Garros, for which he underwent surgery in June.

The stars of the ATP Tour are used to competing on the tennis court, but not in the way they did on Saturday at the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers.

Casper Ruud, Hubert Hurkacz, Tommy Paul, Alex Molcan, Emil Ruusuvuori, Harri Heliovaara and Andreas Mies took on National Hockey League players, including Calgary Flames star Jonathan Huberdeau, in the annual game of ball hockey contested at the Canadian ATP Masters 1000 event.

It was no surprise that the professional hockey players — Huberdeau, Zachary L’Heureux, Marc-Edouard Classic, Jonathan Drouin and Olympic gold medalist in women’s hockey, Melodie Daoust — dominated the action. But there was fun for all involved, especially the tennis players who are hockey fans, like Ruusuvuori.

“I love both. I used to play quite a bit [of hockey] with my friends when I was younger. I love the sport. I still follow and I have a lot of friends playing, also in the NHL. I love both sports and it was really fun today to play with these guys,” Ruusuvuori said. “It was really cool.”

Huberdeau, who was tied for second in the National Hockey League in points last season with 115, is the “Hubi” of the NHL. The Flame even took a photo with the ATP’s “Hubi”, Hurkacz.

“It was a lot of fun. What you guys are doing, it’s a joke. It’s so hard. I’m just struggling to follow somehow the ball,” Hurkacz said. “t’s really amazing.”

“I think these guys are just athletes and they’re talented in every sport, you can tell,” Huberdeau replied. “I’m a big tennis fan. It’s the same thing when you guys play, I think it’s impressive.”

Now, the tennis players will return to their day jobs with the tennis main draw set to begin on Monday.

“I’m definitely better at tennis, but it’s nice to play hockey because I never do it,” Paul said. “This was probably the first time I’ve done it since I was four years old. It wasn’t pretty, but it was fun.”

Cameron Norrie seems to be relishing the role of defending champion.

The Briton moved within one victory of retaining his crown at the Abierto de Tenis Mifel in Los Cabos late on Friday, when he hung tough to secure a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 semi-final victory against second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime at the ATP 250 event in Mexico.

“Especially winning last year, you want to come out and win the title, but [I’ve just] taken it one match at a time,” said Norrie after clinching his first win over the Canadian in five attempts. “It was a tough task at the beginning of the tournament and I got through a couple of matches.

“ [Against] Felix today it was looking really tough, so I was really pleased with how I handled that today, especially after losing that second set.”

The World No. 12 will now seek his third ATP Tour title of 2022 in a championship match clash with Daniil Medvedev, after the World No. 1 was a 7-6(0), 6-1 winner against Miomir Kecmanovic.

Friday’s win improved Norrie’s record in Los Cabos to 11-2. The Briton reached the semi-finals on tournament debut in 2018 before his run to the title last year, but his latest victory on the western coast of Mexico was anything but straightforward. Auger-Aliassime responded to dropping the first set with a mid-match surge, forcing Norrie to dig deep against an opponent he had never beaten before.

“Every time he just gets me and plays better than me, so I really wanted to win that one more than usual,” said Norrie. “I started off great and then Felix found his level in the second set, so I feel really good to get through that one, especially with the last game when he had a couple of chances to break me. I managed to hold on tight and tough it out.

“It feels great to be in the final, and especially to set up a meeting with the No. 1 in the world in Daniil.”

Norrie stayed alert in return games to capitalise on any opportunities he had against Auger-Aliassime. The defending champion converted three from five break points, despite his opponent racking up 17 aces, to prevail in a two-hour, 19-minute encounter and back up his opening wins against Chun-Hsin Tseng and Radu Albot in Mexico this week.

Two of the ATP Tour’s great entertainers did what they do best on Friday night in the Citi Open quarter-finals. Nick Kyrgios and Frances Tiafoe put on a late-night show in one of the matches of the ATP Tour season, not taking their final bows until just before 1 a.m. local time.

Kyrgios saved five match points in a high-octane second-set tie-break before dominating the final set in a 6-7(5), 7-6(12), 6-2 victory, earning the right to remain in the spotlight as he drew the curtains on local favourite Tiafoe’s run.

Neither man led the crucial second tie-break by more than one point until Kyrgios won the last three to send the match to a decider. The drama of the tie-break — and the match — was matched by its quality, with both competitors putting their shotmaking skills on full display throughout.

The highlight-filled contest included tweeners, drop shots, outrageous gets and unbelievable winners along with dominant serving from both sides of the net.

Kyrgios finished with 60 winners, including 35 aces, and took full advantage of Tiafoe’s dipping first-serve percentage to run away with the final set as he maintained his high level on his own deliveries. Tiafoe played his part with 33 winners, including 14 aces.

The Aussie will next face Sweden’s Mikael Ymer, who survived a stirring comeback attempt from American Sebastian Korda on Friday night. A 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 winner, Ymer let a double-break lead slip at 5-2 in the second set and led 5-1 in the third before closing out the win with his eighth break on his fifth match point. 

Daniil Medvedev guaranteed his stay atop the Pepperstone ATP Rankings until at least the end of the US Open by reaching the final at the Abierto de Tenis Mifel on Saturday night in Los Cabos.

In his second stint as World No. 1, Medvedev advanced to his fourth final of the season with a 7-6(0), 6-1 win against fourth seed Miomir Kecmanovic. He will face defending champion Cameron Norrie in Saturday’s final as he seeks his first title of 2022. 

“Very tough match,” Medvedev said in his on-court interview. “He started great and all the first set was a great level. So many tough points, so many points where I felt like I was close to getting the edge. The tie-break was great.”

Kecmanovic came out firing and held a 4-1 lead after saving the first break point against him. The Serbian was fully comfortable in his third semi-final of the year, and he showed it with an array of drop shots, including a three-shot combo in which he casually hit a drop shot, a volley lob and a drop volley to frustrate his opponent.

But Medvedev began to find his groove midway though the opening set, settling in with his metronomic baseline brilliance as he began to control the rallies. He was at his scrambling best early in the tie-break, following up strong defense with a flicked backhand pass as he asked for more noise from the Mexican crowd.

“I’m not the kind of guy to ask [for the crowd to cheer] like this,” he said with a laugh. “I made a great point, so I thought, ‘This one was good, let’s try to pump it up a little bit.'”

After racing through the shutout tie-break, he stayed on the attack to build a 3-0 lead in the second set. He secured a second break late in the set as Kecmanovic began to fade, then hit two well-placed volleys on match point to seal the victory.

Medvedev improved to 2-0 in his ATPHead2Head against the Serbian, backing up his Roland Garros third-round win in May. He also prevailed in his only previous tour-level meeting with his final opponent Norrie, a straight-sets win at the Rolex Shanghai Masters in 2019. The Briton moved within one win of defending his Los Cabos crown with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 semi-final victory against second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Fans at the Lexington ATP Challenger Tour event this week witnessed a wonderful act of sportsmanship by the world No. 344 Chinese player. The 17-year-old and American Stefan Dostanic were locked in a three-set battle in scorching temperatures in the American state of Kentucky when Shang noticed a ballkid, Atharva Dang, in distress.

After asking Atharva if he was okay, Shang exclaimed, “He’s going to faint!” Immediately, Shang set his racquet down and assisted the overheated boy, lifting him into his arms and rushing him behind the umpire’s chair and out of the direct sunlight. After setting him down in the shade, Shang gave a bottle of water to Atharva and placed an ice-pack behind his head.

“I turned around to ask for the ball. When the ballkid gave me the ball, he looked like he was unable to stand,” Shang said. “I asked him, ‘How are you?’ and he said, ‘I don’t feel good.’ He staggered over and I felt like he was going to faint right away. I just did everything I could do with my gut feeling,” the teenager recalled.

Since that moment of sportsmanship, all is well for both Shang and the Atharva. They reunited for a picture the following day and Dang competed in a local tournament on Friday. Shang has advanced to the semi-finals in Lexington, becoming the youngest player to reach a Challenger semi-final since Carlos Alcaraz at Alicante in 2020.

“I remember everything,” Atharva said. “I remember giving him the ball and then he asked me if I was OK. I then remember him dropping his racquet and helping me over to the side where they gave me ice.”

In Saturday’s semi-finals, Shang will play World No. 229 American Aleksandar Kovacevic, who two weeks ago held, but could not convert, six championship points against another Chinese player, Wu Yibing, in the Challenger Tour final in Indianapolis.

The National Bank Open Presented by Rogers singles draw was released on Friday, with a potential second-round showdown between World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios among the surprises.

Kyrgios holds a 2-1 edge in the pair’s ATP Head2Head, though Medvedev was victorious in their Australian Open meeting earlier this year. The Aussie will need to get past Sebastian Baez to set up a rematch, with Medvedev earning a bye as the Montreal top seed. Eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz is a potential quarter-final opponent for either man, while Casper Ruud and Felix Auger-Aliassime headline the second quarter.

Carlos Alcaraz, seeking his third ATP Masters 1000 title, occupies the draw’s bottom line as the second seed. He could meet fifth seed Andrey Rublev for the first time in the quarter-finals. The 19-year-old is making his Montreal debut after claiming his first two Masters 1000s trophies in Miami and Madrid this year.

“At the moment everything is going well,” he said at the draw ceremony. “I like the weather. I like the court. At the moment I’m feeling great.

In the draw’s third quarter, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner are in line for a sixth ATP Head2Head meeting, should the seeds hold.

“I see my chances [as] pretty good this year,” the Greek said at the draw ceremony. “I’m going to have to stick to what I do best. I work hard on the court. I’m hoping for good success in Montreal because I like this place. It has a very very good culture. The people here they have a very good sports culture, which I like a lot.”

The third seed is seeking his first win in at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal. In two appearances at the tournament’s Toronto venue, he has reached a final (2018) and a semi-final (2021).

Playing in his first event since Wimbledon, Tsitsipas said the courts felt slower than he expected, which is to his liking. Alcaraz, coming off of two clay-court final runs in Hamburg and Umag, felt the opposite: “I came here and the first feeling that I had was ‘too fast for me,'” he said with a laugh.

The draw also served up a number of first-round highlights, including Taylor Fritz vs. Andy Murray, Denis Shapovalov vs. Alex de Minuar, Gael Monfils vs. Reilly Opelka and Pablo Carreno Busta vs. Matteo Berrettini.
