Ilya Ivashka surged to a comprehensive 6-4, 6-1 victory against Emil Ruusuvuori on Monday to book a second-round meeting with second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Mallorca Championships.

Ivashka’s first-round victory at the ATP 250 event in Spain came on a day when he rose to a career-high No. 40 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings. The 28-year-old celebrated with a clinical performance against Ruusuvuori, breaking the Finn’s serve four times in an 88-minute victory to extend his lead in the pair’s ATP Head2Head series to 5-0.

Tsitsipas and Ivashka’s two previous tour-level meetings have both come in 2022. The Greek claimed a straight-sets win on hard in Rotterdam in February and backed that up with a three-set triumph on the clay in Barcelona in April.

Third seed Denis Shapovalov’s opening opponent in Mallorca was also set on Monday. Benjamin Bonzi advanced to the second round after Chilean qualifier Alejandro Tabilo retired with the Frenchman leading 6-3, 4-2.

It will be a maiden tour-level meeting for Shapovalov and Bonzi at a tournament where both are appearing for the first time.

Alex de Minaur started his title defence at the Rothesay International with victory Monday, downing Chilean Cristian Garin 6-3, 6-3 to reach the second round in Eastbourne.

The Australian dropped just one set en route to the crown at the ATP 250 event last season and once again looked at home on the grass on the English south coast. The sixth seed broke Garin four times to advance after 83 minutes, improving to 3-0 in their ATP Head2Head series.

The 23-year-old, who holds a 14-11 record on grass, could next play Lorenzo Sonego in a rematch of last season’s final. The Italian will meet Australian qualifier James Duckworth on Tuesday.

Maxime Cressy overcame Reilly Opelka 6-3, 6-1 in an-all American battle to advance to the second round on his debut in Eastbourne.

The 25-year-old won 92 per cent (24/26) of points behind his first delivery as he served and volleyed the fifth seed off the court to move through in 60 minutes.

Cressy, who reached the quarter-finals on grass in Newport last season, will face Briton Daniel Evans or Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the second round.

The Pole rises two spots to return to the Top 10 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings for the first time since March after claiming his maiden grass-court crown at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle. The 26-year-old only broke the Top 100 for the first time last September, but van de Zandschulp’s rise up the rankings continues after reaching the semi-finals at the Cinch Championships in London. The Dutchman jumps three places to No. 26 after defeating Paul Jubb, Grigor Dimitrov and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at The Queen’s Club.

A dream week in Halle propels the 28-year-old to a career-high No. 37, just six months after he broke the Top 100 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings for the first time. Otte’s high-intensity brand of tennis delighted his home support in Germany and took him past Miomir Kecmanovic, Nikoloz Basilashvili and Karen Khachanov, before World No. 1 Medvedev proved too strong in the semi-finals at the ATP 500 event.

A semi-finalist in Stuttgart nine days ago, the Australian returns to the Top 50 for the first time since March 2021 after his second consecutive final-four appearance on the grass in Germany. Kyrgios came through a high-quality second-round battle with second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in Halle, and he also saw off Pablo Carreno Busta before falling to eventual champion Hurkacz in the final four.

Alex Molcan saved all six break points he faced to defeat seventh seed Miomir Kecmanovic 7-5, 6-4 on Sunday at the Mallorca Championships, ensuring Day 1 of the ATP 250 event started with an upset in the Balearic Islands.

Slovakia’s Molcan broke in the final game of each set to secure his first tour-level win on grass in his second event on the surface. The 24-year-old fired 41 winners in the one-hour, 26-minute victory.

The World No. 45 reached the third round of qualifying at Wimbledon in 2021 and is set to make his main-draw debut on the London lawns next week. Since last year’s Wimbledon, he has made winning debuts at each of the other three Grand Slams, including a third-round run at the 2021 US Open.

Molcan awaits Tallon Griekspoor of The Netherlands or Spanish wild card Feliciano Lopez in the second round. He is seeking his first ATP Tour title after reaching three finals in the past 13 months, including this year in Marrakech and Lyon.

Three main-draw matches were completed on Sunday — also the final day of qualifying — with Aslan Karatsev and Mackenzie McDonald also advancing to the second round.

Both Karatsev and McDonald battled back to win after dropping the opening set of their respective matchups. Karatsev closed the day’s play with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 result against home favourite Jaume Munar. After earning an early break to lead 2-1 in the final set, the 28-year-old fought off two break points in each of his next two service games before sealing the match with his fourth break of the contest.

McDonald was a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 winner against Joao Sousa. The American escaped a 0/40 hole in the opening game of the second set and did not face another break point the rest of the way.
