Norrie Passes Ymer Test In Los Cabos Opener

  • Posted: Jul 22, 2021

Cameron Norrie overcame a tricky test in his first match as the top seed at an ATP Tour event, taking down Elias Ymer in a tight 7-6(4), 6-3 win at the Mifel Open on Wednesday.

The British player arrived in Los Cabos at a career-high No. 30 in the FedEx ATP Rankings after reaching a personal-best three finals in Estoril (l. to Ramos-Vinolas), Lyon (l. to Tsitsipas) and the Queen’s Club (l. to Berrettini). He improved to 32-14 on the season with the victory.

“This match had a little bit of everything, and all credit to Elias because he came out and played great,” Norrie said. “It was nice to get my first match win. It was tough conditions, really warm, but it feels good to get that first match out of the way. But all credit to him, I was honestly fortunate to get through the match.”

Norrie had to fight through a sluggish start in the hot and sunny conditions in Baja California Sur, as he ran up against a red-hot Ymer who raced out of the gates dictating play with his groundstrokes. The 25-year-old Swede hit deep through the court and kept Norrie behind the baseline, unable to attack, and Ymer mixed in drop shots to great success.

Ymer held three break opportunities in the first set – all of them set points – as Norrie fired big first serves to stay in the contest at 5-4 and send them into a tie-break at 6-5. But under pressure as Norrie continued to retrieve every ball, Ymer committed three unforced errors in a row from 4/4 to give the Brit the opening set after 69 minutes.

The Swede did well to bounce back and open the second set with an early break, winning eight points in a row as he went 3-1 ahead. But Norrie had already settled into the match and he responded in kind, raising his level and reeling off the next five games in a row to clinch his place in the quarter-finals.

He will next face American qualifier Ernesto Escobedo, who needed an hour and 46 minutes to take down Denis Kudla 6-4, 7-6(9).

Also in action, Alex Bolt defeated Emilio Gomez 6-4, 6-1 in their first tour-level meeting. The Aussie awaits the winner of second seed John Isner and Evgeny Donskoy, who are in action later on Wednesday.

Ace Is The Place For Matteo Berrettini

  • Posted: Jul 22, 2021

You want to hit a bucketload of aces. You want to curtail double faults. You want to be Matteo Berrettini.

An Infosys ATP Beyond The Numbers analysis of the 2021 season to date shows that the 6’5” Italian has mastered better than anyone the art of dropping heat while not giving up free points. Berrettini has not hit the most aces so far in 2021 — that honour goes to Alexander Bublik, who has crushed 517 aces.

Berrettini sits in second place with 430 aces from 39 matches. But Bublik has amassed 227 double faults through the first seven months, while Berrettini is much lower with only 58. When you combine both stats to deliver a single metric, it’s Berrettini who sits at the top of the tree. The following table includes the ten leading performers evaluating aces minus double faults.

2021 Season: Aces & Double Faults

Player  Aces  Double Faults  Aces-Double Faults
 1) Matteo Berrettini  430  58  372
 2) Reilly Opelka  350  46  304
 3) John Isner  317  22  295
 4) Alexander Bublik  517  227  290
 5) Andrey Rublev  301  74  227
 6) Daniil Medvedev  341  120  221
 7) Marin Cilic  334  117  217
 8) Lloyd Harris  282  66  216
 9) Jan-Lennard Struff  332  128  204
 10) Sam Querrey  300  98  202

Berrettini scored the biggest title of his career last month when he won the cinch Championships at The Queen’s Club, an ATP 500 event in London. The Italian was lights out with his serving performance, racking up 68 aces while only committing five double faults for a combined total of 63. That was more than twice as good as the second-best performer at the tournament, Marin Cilic, who hit 45 aces and committed 14 double faults for a combined total of 31.

As you would expect, Berrettini excelled in this part of his game in reaching the recent Wimbledon final. He collected 117 aces while committing just 15 double faults at SW19 for a combined total of 102. That was once again more than twice as good as the second-best player in this data set, who was Nick Kyrgios with 56 aces and eight double faults, which combined for a total of 48.

Berrettini also won Serbia Open in Belgrade this year, hitting 33 aces while collecting just six double faults, for a combined total of 27. The success has helped the 25-year-old Italian climb into third place in the FedEx ATP Race To Turin, which determines who will compete at the Nitto ATP Finals in Italy from 14-21 November.

Berrettini’s first serve is a bomb. He recorded the second-fastest serve at Wimbledon this year at 139mph (224 kmh). His second serve is a heavy kick, which keeps the ball safely away from the net before it dives sharply into the service box. It’s the ideal one-two punch that underpins his current FedEx ATP Ranking at No. 8, his career-high.

Berrettini has mastered power and consistency with the ultimate first-strike weapon.

Editor’s Note: Craig O’Shannessy is the strategy analyst for the Italian Tennis Federation and players including Matteo Berrettini.

Ramos-Vinolas Dashes Home Hopes To Reach Umag QFs

  • Posted: Jul 21, 2021

Albert Ramos-Vinolas is up and running at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag after edging through a hard-fought battle with Croatian wild card Duje Ajdukovic 7-5, 6-4 on Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals.

The Estoril champion saved four break points and won 70 per cent of points behind his first serve to take down Ajdukovic, who was seeking his second-ever win at a tour-level event. The Spaniard snapped a seven-match losing streak in the process, as he claimed his first tour-level singles win since the Mutua Madrid Open against the 20-year-old. He will next face Italian Stefano Travaglia, who charged past Carlos Taberner 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 41 minutes.

With 2001 Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic watching on – days after the former World No. 2 was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport – Ajdukovic fought back from a 0-3 deficit in the first set. He employed big groundstrokes and changed direction of the ball to keep Ramos-Vinolas under pressure.

But the experienced Spaniard took the lead in the seventh game as he saved two break points to move 4-3 ahead. Ramos-Vinolas kept the scoreboard pressure on the young Croatian, who double faulted and produced unforced errors to hand over the decisive break late in the set. In the second set, Ramos-Vinolas rallied from a break down and won five of the next six games from 1-3 to seal the victory.

In the first set, he only dropped four points on serve.

Footballer Tony Adams Leads ATP Mental Health Session

  • Posted: Jul 21, 2021

Kicking off the ATP’s new virtual speaker series last week, Tony Adams MBE, in conversation with Jamie Murray, led a wide-ranging and candid session discussing mental health in professional sport.

The session marked the first of a series open to all ATP players and coaches – as well as alumni, agents and tournament and staff members – aimed at promoting positive health and development across the ATP membership.

Adams, an English football player, captain and legend for both Arsenal and England, was one of the world’s best football players between 1983 and 2002. Despite his tremendous success on the field, Adams battled with alcoholism for much of his playing career.

Throughout the session, Adams talked to ATP’s members about his experiences, from his lowest moments battling addiction, low self-esteem, anxiety and depression, to his greatest moments on the pitch and through to his eventual recovery. The legendary footballer recalled the difficult journey of learning to confront his problems and the pressures of professional sport, which compelled him to help fellow athletes struggling with their mental health.

Towards the end of his career, Adams founded Sporting Chance, a charitable foundation aimed at providing treatment, counselling and support for professional sportspeople. Sporting Chance have been supporting ATP’s player members since the start of the pandemic – a period of particular strain for athletes – providing access to free and fully confidential counselling.

Thompson Topples 42 Y.O. Karlovic In Los Cabos

  • Posted: Jul 21, 2021

It’s never easy to face all-time aces leader Ivo Karlovic, but Jordan Thompson is becoming successful at it. The Australian won his third consecutive match against Karlovic on Tuesday evening, defeating the 2016 Los Cabos champion 6-4, 7-5 to reach the second round of the Mifel Open. Thompson now leads their ATP Head2Head series 3-1.

The fifth seed withstood 11 Karlovic aces and converted three of his four break points to triumph after one hour and 34 minutes. The Croatian gave full credit to Thompson.

“Usually, he was returning really well and he was doing everything right. I had my opportunities early in the beginning of the match and I didn’t use them. My concentration went down at the end of that first set and the beginning of the second,” Karlovic said. “I was able to get back, but again at the end of the second set, I really didn’t use my opportunities. That was it. All in all, it was a really good match.”

[WATCH LIVE 1]

Karlovic, who is now 42, is at No. 200 in the FedEx ATP Rankings. The former World No. 14 admitted after the match that there is a chance he might retire later this year. However, the eight-time ATP Tour titlist left open the possibility of changing his mind should he find success in the coming weeks.

“My ranking dropped a lot and how it looks like now, after the US Open, I think I’m going to retire,” Karlovic said. “But there is still a chance that until then I’ll do well or that at the US Open I’ll do really well and then I will reconsider.”

The other seeded player in action, eighth seed Mackenzie McDonald, fell short in Mexico. American qualifier Ernesto Escobedo ousted his countryman 6-3, 6-4 in 80 minutes. Escobedo will next play Denis Kudla.

In the last match of the evening, Ecuador’s Emilio Gomez eliminated Colombian qualifier Nicolas Mejia 6-4, 6-1. Other players who advanced were Ukrainian Illya Marchenko, Japan’s Yasutaka Uchiyama and Swede Elias Ymer.

#NextGenATP Alcaraz Overcomes Pouille In Umag Debut

  • Posted: Jul 20, 2021

Seventh seed Carlos Alcaraz rallied from a set down for just the second time in his ATP Tour career to take down Lucas Pouille on Tuesday and make a winning start at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag.

In his first outing as a seeded player at a tour-level event, the #NextGenATP Spaniard was overpowered in the first set by Pouille, a former Top 10 player currently No. 103 in the FedEx ATP Rankings. But the 18-year-old raised his level and came back in the second and third sets to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

“I don’t feel different being a seed, because I still come to these tournaments with the goal of growing and playing these kinds of matches,” Alcaraz said. “In the end, it’s the matches that count and give you experience and that you learn from. I come to these tournaments to learn from the really great players.”

Alcaraz, who sits one spot away from his career-high World No. 72 ranking, won 70 per cent (35/50) of his first-serve points and broke the Frenchman three times en route to victory. He improved to 7-5 on clay courts on the season, as he looks to build on his run to the Marbella semi-finals in April.

He will next face Andrej Martin, who needed two hours and 36 minutes to fight back after dropping the first set to lucky loser Renzo Olivo. Martin saved 14 of the 20 break points he faced as he clinched a 1-6, 6-2, 7-6(1) victory.

[WATCH LIVE 1]

Also in action, Marco Cecchinato took down fifth seed Aljaz Bedene 6-1, 6-4 to improve to 2-3 in their ATP Head2Head. Cecchinato, a finalist in Parma in May, is now 14-12 on clay in 2021 and will next face Damir Dzhumur, who scored a 6-4, 6-3 win over qualifier Filip Horansky.

Local wild card Duje Ajdukovic gave Croatian fans plenty to cheer for after defeating Argentine qualifier Andrea Collarini 6-3, 6-2 to claim his first-ever tour-level main draw win. The 20-year-old booked a second-round clash with top seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas as a reward.
