Sydney International: Jamie Murray & Bruno Soares lose in final

Britain’s Jamie Murray and Brazilian partner Bruno Soares lost to Dutch duo Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkoop in the final of the Sydney International.

Murray and Soares won the title last year in only their second tournament as a doubles pairing.

But the top seeds were beaten 6-3 7-5 on Saturday, as Koolhof and Middelkoop won a third ATP trophy.

British number three Dan Evans will face Gilles Muller from Luxembourg in the singles final at 08:30 GMT.

Evans, the world number 67, is playing in his first ATP Tour final.

Elsewhere, American world number 23 Jack Sock won the final of the Auckland Classic with a 6-3 5-7 6-3 victory over Portugal’s Joao Sousa.

Sock’s victory comes after he was forced to retire because of illness in last year’s final against Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut.

Belgian qualifier Elise Mertens beat Romanian third seed Monica Niculescu to win the Hobart International for her first WTA title.

The 21-year-old, ranked 127 in the world, lost nine of her first 10 points before taking control to beat world number 40 Niculescu 6-3, 6-1.

The tournaments build up to the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open in Melbourne, which begins on Monday.

Polish/Pakistani duo claim their first title as a team

Fourth seeds Marcin Matkowski and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi captured the ASB Classic crown with a 1-6, 6-2, 10-3 win over Jonathan Erlich and Scott Lipsky on Saturday.

Erlich and Lipsky quickly claimed the first set after 23 minutes, but the eventual champions fired up for a comeback, breaking early in the second set for a 1-0 lead. The Polish/Pakistani duo capitalised on all three break point chances in their 61-minute victory.

Matkowski and Qureshi topped Ryan Harrison and John Isner 7-6(4), 6-1 in the first round, beat Santiago Gonzalez and David Marrero 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 in the quarter-finals and defeated Marcus Daniell and Marcelo Demoliner 6-4, 6-4 for a final berth.

“I’m really happy with our performances throughout the week and especially the way we found our way back into the matches and to win the title,” said Qureshi. “I’m really happy and proud with the way we handled the pressure and the situations in all of the matches.”

“Obviously it was a great partnership for us so we couldn’t ask for anything else and hopefully we’ll have good luck in Melbourne for each of us and then we can play some more tournaments after,” added Matkowski.

The 35-year-old Matkowski is now 18-28 in ATP World Tour finals, while Qureshi, age 36, improves to 12-16. As champions, they will split $24,380 and 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points.

Unseeded duo Erlich and Lipsky, who upset second seeds Dominic Inglot and Florin Mergea en route to the final, will split $12,820 and 150 Emirates ATP Rankings points.

Calum Puttergill: Australian tennis player banned for bets on matches

Australian tennis player Calum Puttergill has been banned for six months – three of which are suspended – after placing 291 bets on matches.

Puttergill, 1,207th in the rankings, has also been fined $5,000 (£4,115) and will pay a similar fine if he commits another offence before 11 July.

The matches took place between May 2012 and November 2014, but the 23-year-old was not playing in any of them.

An investigation found Puttergill used two online accounts to place the bets.

Rubin, Rublev among second-round qualifying winners on Thursday

#NextGenATP stars Noah Rubin and Andrey Rublev are one step away from the main draw of the Australian Open, with both players recording second-round qualifying victories in a rain-filled Day 3 of qualifying on Friday. Only 16 matches were completed.

Rubin once again came through in a deciding set to take out No. 32 seed Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. The American reached the second round last year in Melbourne through a reciprocal main draw wild card, but looks to qualify for a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. The 20-year-old will now compete for a spot in the main draw against No. 11 seed Evgeny Donsky of Russia, who scored a hard-fought 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-2 victory over Australian Matthew Ebden.

The 18-year-old Rublev recorded one of the biggest upsets of the day by defeating fourth seed Yuichi Sugita of Japan, 6-4, 7-6(2). The Russian squandered two match points trying to serve out the contest at 6-5, but regrouped to win the final five points of the tie-break. Next up for Rublev is a final-round qualifying match against No. 22 seed Peter Polansky of Canada, a 6-4 6-3 winner over Mirza Basic.

ATP World Tour veterans Jurgen Melzer and Julien Benneteau also progressed to the qualifying round. Austrian Melzer, who reached the 2011 fourth round (l. to Murray), knocked out No. 13 seed Taro Daniel 6-3, 6-2 and French No. 26-seed Benneteau overcame Guilherme Clezar 7-5, 6-0.

Other second-round qualifying winners on Friday include Russian Evgeny Donskoy, American Rajeev Ram, Czech Jan Satral and Italian Luca Vanni.

Dan Evans reaches maiden final in Sydney after beating Andrey Kuznetsov

Briton Dan Evans reached his first ATP Tour final with a 6-2 3-6 6-3 win over Andrey Kuznetsov in the semi-finals of the Sydney International in Australia.

Evans, 26, started strongly against the 25-year-old Russian and won the opening set in 30 minutes before being pegged back.

The world number 67 broke serve early in the decider and held on to beat a player ranked 19 places above him.

He will now face Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller at 08:30 GMT on Saturday.

In the men’s doubles, Britain’s Jamie Murray and Brazilian partner Bruno Soares also secured a place in the final with a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) win over Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah.

They will play Dutch duo Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middlekoop at 05:00 on Saturday.

Britain has already enjoyed success at the event with Johanna Konta winning the women’s final after impressively beating Agnieszka Radwanska.
