Although she may not have had the brightest of starts to her 2015 season, Victoria Azarenka still managed to improve her game when she needed it most and ended up with a spot in the second round of the tournament. However, given her unseeded ranking for the event, she will now come up against a surprising second round challenger in Caroline Wozniacki. This will be the ninth meeting between the two competitors, with the Azarenka vs Wozniacki Head to Head series standing at 3-5.

The former champion took part in a slightly competitive match-up against Sloane Stephens but still managed to find herself easing into the second round of the tournament. She defeated her American adversary 6-3, 6-2 to advance to a match-up against Caroline Wozniacki – a ridiculously difficult second round contest. Azarenka won 60% of her first service points and hit 12 winners to close out the match in 1 hour and 15 minutes of court time.

“I felt pretty good. I think from the beginning I started to be pretty focused and just maintained that intensity. So that was a good opportunity to just really at the beginning take my chances because she’s the kind of player that likes to take her chances. There is still a lot to build from here.”

Several hours later, Caroline Wozniacki made it 2-0 against Taylor Townsend this month with her straight sets victory over the American youngster. This time, however, it was a much closer affair. The Dane was forced into a firsts et tiebreak, which she won with relative ease. She then took an early break lead over the American, fended off several more advances and closed out the match 7-6, 6-2 to reach the second round of the Happy Slam. Wozniacki won 72% of her first service points and hit 20 winners during the encounter.

This marks the ninth time that Wozniacki and Azarenka will cross paths on the professional tour and the first time in almost two years. They have not met at a Grand Slam event since their first career meeting and will have contested the vast majority of their matches on hard court. Given Wozniacki’s current form contrasted against Azarenka’s, on would have to give the Danish star the advantage to advance to the third round of the tournament.

Prediction: Caroline Wozniacki in Three Sets
